The Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has formally announced his decision to conduct a caste survey. The project will cost around 420 crore rupees and will cover the entire population of Karnataka. It will see families fill out a 60-question questionnaire to determine their economic and social status. The Chief Minister has said that this decision is necessary to ensure justice and equal representation in the state. The BJP has hit out at the decision saying that the government had already conducted a caste survey in 2015 and this new one was merely an attempt to mislead the OBC population of the state. The question arises: Is Siddaramaiah's decision just for optics or will his survey ensure social justice is delivered.
