Farmers have begun a march from the grain market in Haryana's Karnal to the district offices to protest the August 28 lathi charge. In their way are security forces tasked by the state to stop them, potentially setting up another violent clash. Earlier talks between 11 farmer leaders and district officials - over permission for the march - failed. Rakesh Tikait and Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav were among those at the meeting, and it was expected the farmers would press on with the march despite failing to secure the go-ahead.
