Eleven students at Jawaharlal Nehru University complained of sexual harassment, and the university dismissed Congress MP and professor Bimol Akoijam following an internal inquiry that reportedly upheld nine allegations. Akoijam has formally denied the allegations. As the legal process takes its course, this commentary raises questions about the political response-or the lack of it. Why have Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, both vocal on women's rights and gender justice, remained publicly silent on the case? Does the slogan of smashing patriarchy apply equally when allegations involve a leader from one's own party? The larger question is whether political outrage over sexual misconduct is driven by principle—or by party loyalties and political convenience.
