A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture on the southern main island of Kyushu, triggering tsunami warnings and emergency response measures. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the sea surface.
