Israel has carried out a series of powerful strikes on the Syrian capital Damascus Wednesday, escalating a campaign it says is in support of an Arab minority group involved in deadly clashes with Syrian government forces. Israel has stepped up its campaign despite pressure from the US, which has made moves to end Syria's international isolation. Meanwhile, Fifty people were killed in a massive fire in a hypermarket in al-Kut city in eastern Iraq, local media is reporting. Videos circulating on social media showed flames engulfing a five-storey building in al-Kut overnight, while firefighters were trying to contain the fire.
