Flydubai Flight FZ1073 descended into chaos after Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami attacked Captain Smit Machchhar with the cockpit's emergency axe, according to the captain's account and media reconstructions. Despite being seriously injured and bleeding, Captain Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to intervene. Two off-duty pilots travelling as passengers then helped regain control of the aircraft, which eventually made an emergency landing at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Reports say the aircraft lost nearly 16,000 feet in under two minutes after the autopilot disconnected. There are also reports that the co-pilot may have attempted to shut down an engine after passengers intervened, though this remains unconfirmed. Captain Machchhar has also said the co-pilot used prayer as a ruse before the attack. The emergency codes 7700 and later 7500 reflected the escalating crisis, with 7500 indicating unlawful interference. Several details remain subject to confirmation by the official investigation.
