Floodwaters From Nepal Sweep Across China’s Gyirong Border Port

A deadly wall of mud and floodwater swept from Nepal into China's Gyirong border port in Xizang on Wednesday, killing at least three people and leaving over 200 missing. Footage shows disaster response teams loading relief supplies and deploying to the scene, where raging torrents of mud are seen flowing through a ravine. Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered an all-out search and rescue operation, calling for the missing to be found, residents in danger evacuated and the injured treated. He also ordered stepped-up monitoring and early warnings against further disasters. Chinese authorities said the mudslide struck at around 10:30 on Wednesday morning after surging across the border from Nepal. It caused major casualties and left people unaccounted for at Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, Shigatse. Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has travelled to the scene with officials to direct the rescue and disaster response. China has activated a Level I emergency response in Xizang, with 431 firefighters, 72 vehicles, search and rescue dogs, life detectors and inflatable boats sent to the scene. A separate national Level II disaster relief response has also been activated. In neighbouring Nepal, a landslide of mud and rock crashed into the Lhende River, unleashing catastrophic flooding that swept away homes, roads and infrastructure, killing at least 95 people.
