Guwahati, August 19: The Down Rajdhani Express was stopped temporarily on Wednesday morning after an elephant herd crossed the railway track at Hawaipur in Assam’s Hojai district, allowing the animals to pass safely. According to sources, the train was halted at Km 167/8 as the elephant herd crossed the tracks at Hawaipur under Lanka Range of the Nagaon South Division. Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah also shared the incident on social media, describing it as an unexpected halt that allowed the “adorable giants” to cross safely. He said the alert actions of Assam Forest Department personnel, the loco pilot and the Lumding Railway Control Room ensured the safe passage of the elephant herd, following which the train resumed its journey. The incident highlights the continued efforts of forest personnel and railway authorities to prevent human-wildlife conflict and ensure the safe movement of elephants across railway tracks in Assam.
