Ebola Outbreak | In Congo’s Ebola Epicenter, A Burial Team Works Under Threats And A Ticking Clock

In Congo’s Ebola epicentre, burial teams are working against time as the outbreak continues to spread rapidly. Inside secured treatment centres, members of Dignified and Safe Burial teams prepare the bodies of victims while facing the risk of exposure to the virus, community rejection and, at times, physical threats. More than 3,000 people have died among over 6,100 confirmed cases, according to government data. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned of uncontrolled expansion of the outbreak, with most new cases occurring outside known transmission chains. The World Health Organization says the outbreak is on track to surpass West Africa’s 2014–16 Ebola epidemic, which killed around 11,000 people.
