Six decades ago India as a country decided that dowry should be banned and taking dowry should be made punishable offence. But the written law of the land doesn't seem to have caught up with the people, otherwise 28-year-old Noida woman Nikki who lived less than an hour away from the Parliament which made law wouldn't have been burnt alive, allegedly by her husband and mother-in-law, over a demand of getting Rs 36 lakh from her parents as dowry.
