A custodial death in Tamil Nadu has triggered protests and a fresh political confrontation.
Sabari Varman, a remand prisoner lodged at the Nagercoil District Jail in Kanniyakumari, died while in judicial custody on July 13. According to the Tamil Nadu Police, Varman had been arrested on July 9 in connection with the alleged possession and sale of banned tobacco products.
During the investigation, officials found evidence suggesting that an altercation took place inside the prison on the night before his death.
