China and North Korea have officially opened the New Yalu River Bridge, ending more than a decade of delays and creating a major new border crossing between the two neighbours. The bridge connects Dandong in China's Liaoning Province with Sinuiju in North Korea, with vehicles and lorries now crossing the four-lane structure over the Yalu River. Completed in 2014, the bridge remained largely unused because connecting roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side were unfinished. The new crossing is expected to increase trade capacity, ease pressure on the ageing China-DPRK Friendship Bridge and strengthen economic cooperation. Its opening comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between Beijing and Pyongyang.
