A report in the Business Standard newspaper shows that consumer spending has fallen for the first time in more than four decades in 2017-18, primarily driven by slackening rural demand, which experts say points to a rise in poverty. The report claims to quote offical data complied by the National Statistical Office (NSO). The government says, "There is rigorous procedure for vetting of data and reports produced through surveys. All such submissions that came to ministry are draft in nature and can not be deemed to be final report."
