At least 30 people were killed after a mountainous heap of refuse collapsed at the Dar Es Salam landfill in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, early Sunday. Authorities said heavy rains triggered a landslide at the city’s largest open-air waste dump, with the heap collapsing several times and trapping people. Six others were seriously injured and nearby homes were destroyed. A search and rescue operation was launched to locate survivors. The landfill had been scheduled for closure, while residents had already received eviction notices.
