12,000 Food Inspections, 5,200 Notices: Tukaram Mundhe On Food Safety Drive

In an exclusive conversation with NDTV's Shiv Aroor, Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe discusses his continuing crackdown on food businesses across the state. He reveals that around 12,000 food-sector establishments were inspected in roughly 100 days, with more than 5,200 issued improvement notices and 603 licences suspended for non-compliance. Mundhe explains why he believes food safety must be viewed as a wider public-health issue, and urges consumers to pay closer attention to what they eat, particularly foods high in fat, salt and sugar and the ingredients in packaged products.
