- Prix Versailles released its list of the world's most beautiful airports
- It features six terminals across the world
- This is an unranked selection that spotlights architectural achievements
A prestigious new list of the world's most beautiful airports for 2025 was recently unveiled in Paris. The selection was made by the Prix Versailles committee. This annual recognition highlights architectural excellence across the global travel sector. Six airports and terminals have been chosen for their outstanding design, sustainability efforts, and cultural relevance. Note that this is not a ranked list. According to the Prix Versailles, these airports represent a combination of operational, ecological, and aesthetic achievements. Later this year, three of these terminals will also receive individual World Titles (Prix Versailles, Interior or Exterior).
Prix Versailles is an international award series that recognises architectural accomplishments across different categories every year. These awards have been announced at UNESCO since their establishment in 2015.

1. Yantai Penglai International Airport (Terminal 2) In Yantai, China
Yantai Penglai International Airport
The newly unveiled Terminal 2 of Yantai Penglai International Airport in China is a tribute to the region's coastal beauty. It is designed by Aedas with CSWADI and the Shanghai New Era Airport Design Institute. The roofline mirrors the flowing contours of Kunyu Mountain. The terminal's E-shaped structure facilitates easy passenger circulation. A soaring glazed dome crowns the multi-level atrium, allowing sunlight to flood the space. Inside, the design draws on nautical motifs, with curved interiors resembling ship hulls in a nod to the Maritime Silk Road. The 167,000-square-metre terminal aims to be a symbol of openness for the Shandong Peninsula.
2. Marseille Provence Airport (Terminal 1) in Marignane, France
Marseille Provence Airport
A major transformation has brought new life to Terminal 1 at Marseille Provence Airport. Foster + Partners designed a central "Coeur" (Heart), which is a 22,000-square-metre extension. Built using 70% recycled steel, it rises to 22 metres and features skylights and polished aluminium. There are also timber elements that recall Marseille's Old Port boat houses. The project also restored 28,000 square metres of space, preserving Fernand Pouillon's original 1960s structure while integrating Richard Rogers' later additions. Passengers now pass through a warm, wood-clad security zone. They can enjoy views of the inland Provencal terrain on one side and the coastal lagoon on the other.
3. Roland Garros Airport (Arrivals Terminal) In Reunion Island, France
Roland Garros Airport
Set against the lush backdrop of Reunion Island, the 13,000-square-metre Arrivals Terminal at Roland Garros Airport is the first tropical bioclimatic airport building of its scale. Designed by AIA Life Designers, the terminal capitalises on local expertise, with 91% of the work carried out by local businesses. A central "canyon" structure not only defines the terminal's shape but also functions as a natural ventilation shaft. The shutters are equipped with sensors that respond to changing weather conditions, enabling real-time airflow adjustments. The interiors use wood and native greenery to reflect the island's landscape and culture.
4. Kansai International Airport (Terminal 1) In Osaka, Japan
Kansai International Airport
Originally created by renowned architect Renzo Piano, Kansai International Airport has long been an icon, rising from an artificial island in Osaka Bay. Its Terminal 1 is the longest airport terminal in the world. Now, Populous has reimagined Terminal 1 to prepare it for future growth. The overhaul has expanded international capacity by 25% while maintaining the terminal's flowing roofline and sleek structure. Inside, natural materials bring a distinctively Japanese aesthetic. A smart queuing system has been implemented to enhance the passenger experience.

5. Portland International Airport (Main Terminal) In Portland, United States
Portland International Airport
ZGF's redesign of Portland International Airport's Main Terminal captures the spirit of Oregon's forests. There's a sweeping timber roof that spans over 36,000 square metres. Materials were sourced locally within 500 km. A "forest to frame" tracking system was used to trace the wood back to its origins. Biophilic elements, abundant daylight, and scenic views enhance the calming ambience. The terminal's interior is laid out like a series of interconnected rooms, echoing the urban rhythm of Portland itself. It's a transformation that balances sustainability and serenity.
6. San Francisco International Airport (Terminal 1) In San Francisco, United States
San Francisco International Airport
The newly redeveloped Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport is a model of environmental progress and cultural depth. Led by Gensler and Kuth Ranieri, the project has slashed energy use by 59% and reduced carbon emissions by 79%. The space is bathed in soft natural light and enhanced with Bay Area craftsmanship and art. Housing the world's only accredited airport museum, the terminal doubles as a cultural showcase. It is also a tribute to Harvey Milk.
The six selected terminals for 2025 reflect a wide range of geographic locations and architectural styles. Final global awards will be announced in December this year.
