CBI officials booked for threatening crime branch officer

Kochi: A case was registered on Monday against three CBI officials for allegedly beating and threatening the suspended crime branch Deputy Superintendent of Police (DYSP), N Abdul Rasheed who was arrested in connection with the attack on a reporter of a Malayalam daily at Kollam last year.

The case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Mr Rasheed's brother, police said. The complaint stated that he was threatened and beaten up by CBI officials in custody after his arrest, sources said.

Mr Rasheed, former DYSP of the NRI cell of crime branch, Thiruvananthapuram and State President of the Kerala Police service association, was arrested by CBI on April 16.

The case had been handed over to CBI after the Kerala Union of Working Journalists appealed to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in this regard.

Mathrubhumi reporter VB Unnithan was attacked by a gang of hired criminals on April 16 last year while he was returning home from work. He was allegedly targeted for writing a story in the daily about some police officers having attended a party thrown by a liquor contractor in the government guest house at Kollam on October, 2009.

The crime branch had earlier investigated the case. Unnithan, who was seriously injured, was hospitalised for nearly eight months following the attack.
