Tharoor, Pushkar reception in Delhi

"Amma, welcome to the family," these words by Tharoor's son Kanishk and Ishan moved Sunanda Pushkar to tears, soon after her marriage on Sunday.

The couple has a busy schedule ahead as they will wing their way to Dubai for a reception and move on to Spain for a short honeymoon.

On 'Thiruvonam', the most auspicious day of the 10-day Onam festival, the Tharoors shared a vegetarian meal served in a plantain leaf at the home.

The couple was married this weekend. "I had a great time. After my wedding ceremony, the best moment that I have had is at this orphanage," said Sunanda.

The Tharoor's were at a welfare home for the under-privileged in Tharoor's constituency of Thiruvananthapuram. They distributed gifts, and looked on enthusiastically as Onam folk songs were performed.

The wedding took place at Tharoor's ancestral home with close friends and family members in attendance.

The wedding was a typical Kerala style marriage where the bride Sunanada was dressed in traditional saree called the Set saree and Tharoor attired in white shirt and dhoti known as mundu in Kerala.

Tharoor, a former Under Secretary General at the United Nations, won by a record margin of nearly one lakh votes from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency in 2009. He resigned as a Minister of State of External Affairs following a controversy over the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Incidentally, the last Onam for Tharoor too was a memorable one. For the first time in five decades, he celebrated the festival in Kerala by having the traditional Thiru Onam lunch at an orphanage.

Tharoor's 200-year-old ancestral home was been given a fresh coat of paint and a marquee has also come up in front. This was Tharoor's third marriage.

This is considered one of the most important parts of a Kerala style wedding.

Tharoor, 54, was born in London but has his roots in Palakkad. He had his school education in Mumbai and Kolkata and secured a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He completed a PhD at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Massachusetts.

The ceremony took place in the presence of his 94-year-old maternal grandmother.
