Eight opposition members of the Rajya Sabha were suspended on Monday for the rest of the session over the chaos in the House during Sunday's passing of the farm bills. A meeting between military commanders of India and China was held near the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control to defuse tension along the de facto border between the two neighbours.

Eight opposition MPs were on Monday suspended from the Rajya Sabha - the most in the history of the Upper House - for the remainder of Parliament's monsoon session for "gross disorderly conduct" during protests against two contentious farm bills the previous day, triggering a fresh confrontation between the government and the Opposition. Senior military commanders from India and China on Monday met in the eastern Ladakh sector in their latest attempt to break the logjam in talks to reduce tensions along the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Nimai Ray, an MA in sociology and a farmer, feels the two farm bills that were pushed through in Parliament on Sunday have cost him his independence. "It's like your independence has been taken away and you are working as a labourer in some company," he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the passage of the bills as "a watershed moment in the history of Indian agriculture" and the Opposition has labelled them a "death warrant" on the farmer.
Rajya Sabha was on Monday adjourned for the day amid uproar by opposition members over suspension of eight MPs, including TMC leader Derek O'Brien and Sanjay Singh of AAP, for the remaining part of the Monsoon session over their "unruly behaviour" during the passage of farm bills. The proceedings of the House were almost washed out as it could not take up any legislative business.
