Aadhaar, derived from the Hindi word aadhaar, means foundation, base or basis. In the true sense, the Aadhaar card has become a basis for accessing various government and public services in India. It is also widely used as proof of identity for many private services. Whether you need to book a train ticket, get a SIM card or enrol your child in school, Aadhaar is often one of the first documents requested. However, many people are unhappy with the photograph on their Aadhaar card. They often overlook this detail when getting the card made, only to realise later that the photograph is not satisfactory. This raises the question: Can you change your Aadhaar photograph, and if you have already changed it once, can you change it again?
How many times can you change the photo on your Aadhaar?
According to the official website of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), there is no fixed limit on how many times you can change the photograph on your Aadhaar card. If you want to change your Aadhaar photograph, you need to visit a nearby Aadhaar centre and request a biometric update. There is no specific limit on how many times the photograph can be updated.
How to change your Aadhaar photo and what is the fee?
UIDAI allows you to update the photograph on your Aadhaar card. However, you cannot do this online from home. You must visit a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra because the process requires a camera and biometric verification.
At the Aadhaar Seva Kendra, you will need to fill out an Aadhaar update form. Your biometrics will then be verified, and a new photograph will be taken using a camera at the centre. This photograph will appear on your updated Aadhaar card.
You may have to pay a fee of Rs 125 to change your photograph. Once the process is complete, your Aadhaar details will be updated within a few days, after which you can download your updated Aadhaar card.
How can I raise a complaint if my update request is rejected?
Online Method: Visit the UIDAI Grievance Redressal Portal and submit a complaint. Email help[at]uidai[dot]gov[dot]in , Call UIDAI Helpline: 1947 (Toll-Free) or Visit UIDAI Regional Office: Find the details on the UIDAI website and visit in person.
