'Rapist' tantrik not an Indian, say police

Mumbai: It's now official that self proclaimed black magician Mehndi Kasim Sheikh is not an Indian national. In a significant development the JJ Marg police have recovered fake identity cards such as passport photocopies, PAN card and Election card from Sheikh's possession. The police have now booked him on charges of forgery. The police suspect that Sheikh can blow the lid off a racket and name people involved in making forged government documents.

According to police sources, following Sheikh's arrest, the police had raided his rented accommodation in Kalyan and had recovered photocopies of passport, PAN card and Election card. "We inquired with the concerned departments after the cards seized. All of them said that they had not issued the documents. This proves that Sheikh has been living in the city with fake documents and hiding his identity," said a police official, requesting anonymity.

He added that, all the documents have been issued in year 1998. "We are making inquiries as to who had helped Sheikh in getting these ID cards. There is a possibility that he knows of a racket specialised in preparing fake documents and needs to be investigated. We have now slapped a forgery charge on him," the officer added.

"We suspect that he owns a few more properties in West Bengal, the place from where the accused claims he hails from. We are also probing if any of the his family members resided or had any links with Bangladesh," said Khanderao Patil, Senior Inspector J J Marg Police Station.

Meanwhile, Sheikh was produced before a local court on Friday, which extended his police custody till December 07. He was arrested for raping six teenagers (all cousin sisters) and their domestic help. The police had sought to extend his custody to investigate whether he had exploited any other families in a similar fashion.
