Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has received a threatening WhatsApp voice note demanding crores of rupees in ransom, police said on Tuesday. The threat comes days after a firing incident at filmmaker Rohit Shetty's home in Mumbai.

Mumbai Police have stepped up security outside the 40-year-old actor's home and are tracing the sender of the threat.

Police suspect that members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang could be behind the threat to Ranveer, who most recently starred in the blockbuster 'Dhurandhar', with the purpose of extortion, police said.

The crime branch of Mumbai Police has launched a probe.

The Attack On Rohit Shetty's Home

At least five rounds were fired at the first floor of Rohit Shetty's nine-storey building in Juhu area at 12.45 am on February 1. One bullet struck the glass of a gym inside the building, police said.

Police have arrested five people in connection with the firing, and claimed that the accused were acting on the instructions of Shubham Lonkar, an absconding member of Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

Lonkar is also wanted in the cases related to the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique and a firing outside actor Salman Khan's Bandra residence.

Lawrence Bishnoi's gang has also claimed responsibility in the past for multiple attacks on actor-comedian Kapil Sharma's cafe in Canada, while also issuing threats to actor Salman Khan. In one instance, a threat note was left at Bandra Bandstand, where Khan's father Salim Khan went for his daily walk.
