JP Singh, a former senior police officer, made his political debut in the Bihar Assembly elections from the Chapra constituency on a Jan Suraaj Party ticket.

Singh, a 2000-batch IPS officer, has been active in Chapra for about a year, engaging with local issues and building a political presence ahead of the elections.

Who Is JP Singh?

Born in Saran (Chapra) in Bihar, JP Singh is a 2000-batch IPS officer and former Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) in Himachal Pradesh.

He began his police career in 2001 as a probationer in Kangra and went on to serve as Additional Superintendent of Police. Over the years, he held several key posts, including ADC to the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Superintendent of Police in Chamba and Sirmaur, Commandant, and SP (Intelligence).

JP Singh also served as Inspector General (IG) of both the South and North Ranges, and held a tenure in the Vigilance Department before heading the Criminal Investigation Department as ADGP.

He took voluntary retirement to enter politics in July 2025. After leaving service, he joined the Jan Suraaj Party led by Prashant Kishor. "I was keeping an eye on Jan Suraj ever since it was formed as a political party in Bihar. It is committed to the development of Bihar, and its leader, Prashant Kishor, is a visionary person," Singh told news agency IANS at the time.

243 assembly seats are up for grabs in Bihar, and any party or coalition will need at least 122 seats to form a majority in the state.
