A 52-year-old man from Maharashtra's Thane city lost Rs 1.46 crore to two fraudsters who posed as National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) officials and lured him with promises of policy premium refunds and high investment returns, police said on Saturday.
Based on a complaint, the Kasarvadavali police have registered a case under section 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Information Technology Act against suspects Sandeep Sharma and his assistant Raviraj Shukla, who posed as an NCPI manager and his assistant, an official said.
The accused targeted the victim between September 5, 2024 and August 11, this year, allegedly promising to secure a refund of his policy premium along with high financial returns.
Under various pretexts, including registration fees, NPCI fees, and stamp duty charges, the fraudsters instructed the victim to transfer money to multiple bank account numbers via WhatsApp. Over time, the victim transferred Rs 1.46 crore, the official said.
No arrests have been made in the case so far, and further probe is underway, he added.
