Vijay's two-year-old party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), turned out to be a giant slayer in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 108 seats in the 234-member house. It appears, though, the actor-politician had been preparing for this moment much before he formally entered politics.

Vijay's social media popularity had already turned him into a powerful public figure before his party even fought elections, according to a report by Moneycontrol.

The 51-year-old joined Instagram in 2023 and quickly became one of India's most talked-about celebrities online. He has 17 million followers at the moment after gaining over 1.5 lakh new followers on Instagram last month. He has just 41 posts as of now.

His image posts now average around 2.6 million likes and nearly 60,000 comments. This gives him an engagement rate of 15.5 per cent.

Vijay's Audience Base

In the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, voters aged between 18 and 39 reportedly supported Vijay in large numbers. This age group makes up around 42 per cent of the state's electorate.

A similar trend is visible on Instagram too. According to the report, nearly 64 per cent of Vijay's Instagram followers are women, while more than 71.49 per cent belong to the 25-34 age group.

The report states that Vijay's strongest online support comes from Chennai, which alone contributes 27.6 per cent of his total Instagram audience. His profile also receives strong engagement from Dubai, England and Istanbul.

Vijay vs Virat Kohli Social Media Game

The report compared Vijay's Instagram performance with Virat Kohli, one of India's biggest social media stars with 274 million followers. While Kohli has a much larger follower base, Vijay's followers are said to be more active and genuine.

According to data shared by creator intelligence platform Qoruz, Kohli's audience credibility score stands at 80.9 per cent. This score checks how real and trustworthy a celebrity's followers are by tracking things like fake accounts, inactive followers or sudden drops in follower count.

Vijay, on the other hand, reportedly has a 100 per cent audience credibility score.

Why Vijay Has Stronger Follower Base

The report noted that Vijay's Instagram strategy is different from many other celebrities. He posts less frequently, avoids promotional advertisements, and mainly shares carefully selected updates linked to films, public appearances, and social messages.

The report pointed out that four out of Kohli's last 10 Instagram posts were brand collaborations, which can sometimes make followers lose interest or reduce engagement.

Even though Vijay posts less often than most celebrities and influencers, nearly 15 percent of his followers actively react to his content through likes, comments and shares.

Vijay's Engagement Data

Vijay gets more than two comments for every 100 likes on his posts. His likes-to-comments ratio stands at 2.24, compared to the average 1.59 seen among influencers in the same category.

On average, his content gets around 184 views for every 100 followers, while similar celebrity accounts usually get only 27 views per 100 followers. On average, his Instagram reels receive 31.3 million views, 3.4 million likes and around 1.36 lakh comments. The engagement rate on these reels reportedly reaches as high as 20.6 per cent.

Vijay's Viral Videos On Instagram

One of his highest performing videos was posted on August 22, when TVK openly spoke about its political ambitions. In the video, Vijay described himself as the "voice of the simple one" and said he was "not a single person but the ocean." This post received around 19.5 million likes and 3,67,800 comments.

Another highly successful post was shared on December 18, 2025, where Vijay thanked people in Erode. That post alone received 7.1 million likes and 1,37,200 comments.

Why Vijay's Instagram Performs Better Than Other Politicians' Accounts

Recent posts by former CM MK Stalin focused mainly on elections and government-related messaging. One of Stalin's latest posts reportedly received around 5.35 lakh likes and 12,400 comments.

Similarly, posts by AIADMK's Edappadi K Palaniswami mostly focus on election campaigns, attacks on political opponents and birthday wishes for celebrities. His best-performing recent post reportedly received around 25,700 likes.

Vijay's Instagram feed, however, is a mix of his political party and promotions for his upcoming film Jana Nayagan, making him a more attractive figure to the masses.
