New Delhi:

A 72-year-old man, who had been on the run for nearly 15 years in connection with an extortion case, has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. The accused, identified as Hari Singh Shekhawat, a resident of Rajasthan's Jaipur, had been declared a proclaimed offender by a court in 2016.

The case dates back to 2008, when Shekhawat allegedly attempted to extort money from a prominent garment multinational company he was employed at. A case of extortion, criminal intimidation, and an attempt to commit offences was registered against Shekhawat on March 15, 2008.

As he repeatedly failed to appear before the court and allegedly continued to evade legal proceedings, he was declared a proclaimed offender on April 2, 2016.

Shifted Base To Evade Arrest

The Special Cell said its South-Western Range team had been tracking long-evading criminals and carried out extensive human surveillance to locate Shekhawat.

During the investigation, police found that he had initially shifted to Gujarat and later moved to Rajasthan in an attempt to avoid arrest and legal proceedings.

After more than a month of surveillance, the team received specific information on August 13 that Shekhawat was hiding in Jaipur.

A raiding team led by Sub-Inspector Rakesh, along with SI Vishal Tiwari, Head Constables Naveen Chillar, Naveen Sharma and Kuldeep, was sent to Jaipur. The team conducted searches and eventually traced Shekhawat to a residential society in the city.

After confirming his identity and residence, he was apprehended and arrested in accordance with the law.

Accused Worked With Several MNCs

Police said Shekhawat, a graduate of Xavier School of Management, formerly Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), had worked in senior positions with several multinational companies.

According to the Special Cell, he was working with a garment multinational in 2008 when he allegedly attempted to extort money from the company.

The police said his arrest brings to an end a long interstate pursuit that involved tracing his movements across Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan.
