A man was shot dead by a hunter, "mistaking" him for a wild animal in Manipur's Churachandpur district on Monday, officials said.
The man has been identified as Ginkhansuan Guite (60) and was allegedly shot dead by his fellow hunter at Mualnuam area in the district.
The victim, along with the accused hunter, had gone together for hunting at Kawltung area within the village jurisdiction of Mualnuam.
Preliminary investigation stated that the two parted ways in the forest and, after a while, the accused, in the wilderness, mistook the victim for a wild animal and allegedly shot him.
The villagers retrieved the body after being informed of the incident by the accused, they said.
