Assam minister Pijush Hazarika on Saturday accused the Congress party and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi of dragging cultural figures into politics and attempting to divide society ahead of the Assam Assembly polls
Addressing the media, Hazarika said the BJP-led government has undertaken several developmental works in the state, expressing confidence that the people of Assam will once again support the BJP and its alliance partners.
He criticised the Congress for allegedly invoking the name of late Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg's family in political discourse, calling it a "big blunder" and demanding an apology. Hazarika said that even family members expressed displeasure over the matter and maintained that cultural figures should not be used for political gains.
On the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the minister reiterated the party's stance and said that there should be "one country, one constitution," while adding that provisions related to Sixth Schedule areas would be respected.
Hazarika also reacted strongly to remarks made by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, alleging that divisive slogans and statements could harm Assam's social harmony and cultural identity. He claimed that such rhetoric could create tension in society and emphasised that the BJP government is committed to safeguarding the interests, culture, and identity of the indigenous people of Assam.
The minister further said that the government remains firm in its stand to protect the demographic balance and cultural heritage of the state, asserting that the future of Assam's younger generations must be secured.
Hazarika added that the party's focus remains on development, preservation of Assamese identity, and ensuring stability in the state ahead of the upcoming polls.
