Shillong:

Amid heightened tensions following the August 19 violence during a Khasi Students' Union (KSU) protest in Meghalaya's Shillong, long queues were seen outside fuel stations across the city on Friday night, with several outlets reportedly running dry.

The unrest had triggered a blockade of Meghalaya-bound vehicles by Assam taxi drivers after more than 30 tourist vehicles were vandalised. This was followed by a counter-blockade on the Meghalaya side, further straining relations between the two neighbouring states.

Adding to concerns, the North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMZ) on Friday threatened to suspend the transportation of petrol, diesel and LPG from Assam to Meghalaya, citing safety concerns for Assam-registered vehicles operating in the state.

The union said the suspension would remain in place until the Meghalaya government takes effective measures to ensure the safety of Assam-registered vehicles, including tourist vehicles. It also urged Meghalaya authorities to restore normalcy and take strict action against those responsible for the violence and harassment.

NEPMZ general secretary Ramen Deka said the union had also suspended loading and unloading operations in Meghalaya amid reports of unrest in several parts of the state.

"Since petroleum products are highly flammable, this decision has been taken to ensure the safety of both vehicles and goods," Deka said.

Deka added, "If the situation does not improve, our members will not transport any kinds of petroleum products to Meghalaya. It is not possible for our members because there is a safety concern. Unless the situation improves, our members are not willing to transport any kind of petroleum products to Meghalaya. It is not possible to supply essential goods under constant fear and intimidation," he said

The growing tension has now extended beyond the inter-state border, with heightened security deployment across Shillong. Police and security personnel are maintaining a close watch on sensitive areas as authorities from both Assam and Meghalaya continue efforts to defuse the situation and restore normalcy.

Meanwhile, district administrations in several parts of Meghalaya have prohibited the sale and distribution of petrol and diesel in loose quantities, citing public safety concerns amid the ongoing KSU agitation.

According to official orders, the sale of petrol and diesel in unauthorised containers such as jerry cans, bottles and other vessels is prohibited under the Petroleum Act, 1934. Authorities said unregulated sale and illegal hoarding of petroleum products could pose serious fire hazards, endanger lives and property, and disrupt public order.

The restriction will remain in force with immediate effect until further orders. Violators will face action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other applicable legal provisions.

However, the supply of diesel to mobile towers and road construction companies will continue under existing permissions, subject to compliance with the Petroleum Act and relevant regulations.

The orders were issued ex parte in view of the urgency of the situation.
