Residents across Delhi-NCR felt tremors on Friday after an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck Afghanistan. The epicentre of the earthquake was near Darawan at 71.01 degrees E and 36.52 degrees N.
Tremors were also felt in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Kargil. There were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage, and the vibrations were described as mild in nature.
This comes as Delhi-NCR witnessed light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds after a dust storm swept through the national capital, the India Meteorological Department said on Friday.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for the south, central, and New Delhi areas, while a yellow alert remains in place for the southwest, west, and northeast areas. Thunderstorms and lightning are forecast for Saturday, with the maximum temperature expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 20 degrees Celsius.
This is the second time Delhi and neighbouring areas have experienced tremors this year. The first occurred in January when a mild earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale struck New Delhi on a Monday morning, causing brief tremors across parts of the national capital.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at around 8.44 am, with its epicentre located in North Delhi at a shallow depth of five kilometres.
