The body of a Delhi teenager who was missing for four days after falling into an open drain has been found.
15-year-old Mithun fell into an open drain on Saturday morning in southeast Delhi's Jasola village while chasing a kite. Search was on for the boy for four days. The body was finally found on Tuesday.
Following the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suspended a junior engineer of South East (Central) Zone for alleged dereliction of duty. The MCD said disciplinary proceedings are being initiated against the official.
Mithun, a Class 8 student, went missing around 11 am on Saturday, with his family and authorities suspecting he fell into an drain near his house. Mithun's family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lives in the area and works as labourers in Delhi.
A multi-agency search involving the Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rescue teams and divers was launched after the incident.
A video purportedly showing Mithun's father searching for his son in the drain with a stick in his hand had gone viral on social media. The video showed the distraught father entering the drain himself as the rescue operation failed to locate the boy.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had expressed strong displeasure and deep sorrow over the incident, a CMO official told news agency PTI.
Gupta had directed the chief secretary to provide information about the jurisdiction of the drain in question within an hour and suspend the guilty officer, he added.
