Two MLAs were among six people who were injured in a horrific road accident in the busy ITO area of Delhi on Sunday night, police said on the day.

According to officials, Anil Jha, the sitting MLA from Kirari and Abhay Patel, an MLA from Karnataka, were the two legislators who were injured after an out-of-control car struck their SUV at around 9:30 pm at the busy intersection in central Delhi.

The accident happened when the Swift car's driver lost control of the vehicle after its cylinder burst and hit a divider near the PWD office. It then crashed a railing collided with the Innova SUV the MLAs were travelling in, which was coming from the opposite direction.

The Swift was being driven by Ashutosh Pandey, 32, who was travelling with his wife and two minor children. The Innova, displaying a 'Karnataka Government' board, was occupied by Jha and Patel.

All six persons sustained minor injuries in the accident. They were rushed to the LNJP Hospital, and are undergoing treatment. Police said their condition was stable.

The family was travelling from Laxmi Nagar towards ITO. The car got completely mangled due to the impact. The front portion of the Innova was also damaged. Visuals showed all the airbags deployed following the accident.

Police personnel and passersby rushed immediately towards the accident spot following the crash. A team of cops from the IP Estate Police Station also reached the spot upon receiving information, and found the two damaged cars.

The fire brigade was also called to the scene and both vehicles were removed from the road. Traffic at the ITO crossing was disrupted for a while due to the accident.

Police stated that further investigation is ongoing to establish the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Officials are working to determine the exact cause of the cylinder burst and the speed of the vehicle during the accident.
