- The elderly parents filed a complaint after prolonged mental and physical abuse by their son
- Hyderabad Police emphasized strict action against cruelty towards senior citizens
A Hyderabad court has sentenced a 44-year-old man to 60 days in jail for allegedly harassing and assaulting his elderly parents, a day after they approached the police with a complaint detailing prolonged abuse.
The convicted man, identified as G Srinivas, is a private employee. According to police, his elderly parents approached the police after facing continuous mental and physical harassment at home. Officials said Srinivas had earlier been warned about his behaviour, but he allegedly continued abusing his parents.
The sentence was passed on Friday by the Special Judicial Magistrate Court. The elderly parents had lodged a complaint on May 21, stating that their son had been harassing and assaulting them for a long time.
Police Response
Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said cruelty towards elderly parents is both "inhuman and punishable." He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those who harass or neglect senior citizens.
"Parents deserve care, dignity and protection, not fear inside their own homes," the Commissioner said, highlighting the department's focus on senior citizen safety.
Police officials said they have strengthened Senior Citizen Safety initiatives through regular visits, quick Dial-100 response, spot FIRs and direct monitoring by senior officers.
The Hyderabad City Police also urged senior citizens facing abuse or neglect to approach the police without fear, assuring immediate support and legal protection.
Bill On Parental Support
The Telangana Assembly in March passed the 'Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026,' aimed at ensuring financial security for senior citizens.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy at the time had said the Bill seeks to go beyond existing central legislation. He noted that the country already has a national law, the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. The Bill will also cover public representatives and private employees.
The Bill mandates that public representatives, government employees, and private employees care for their elderly parents. Failure to comply will result in a deduction of 15% of the salary or Rs 10,000, whichever is lower, payable to the parents.
