In an increasingly politically correct world, trolls on social media remain un-woke and unrepentant. Actress Anushka Shetty has been trending after photos of her at a temple went viral and not in a good way. The Baahubali star, dressed in white, was photographed at Maha Shivratri puja; while most fans were thrilled to see her after a fairly extensive absence, others judged her and found her wanting. Some on Twitter seemed to be offended that Anushka's appearance did not match their unforgiving expectations. "Lost all hope," read one rude comment on Twitter. "Very sad, plz sweety get slim" another troll wrote in a more direct attack. We will not embed the comments in this story.

Here's a clip of the very lovely Anushka Shetty at Maha Shivratri celebrations:

Public scrutiny is a function of fame but the exacting and often unrealistic beauty standards women are held to are not just vile but outright dangerous. Amplified by social media, which tends to reduce celebrities to something less than human, shaming of any kind assumes gargantuan proportions.

This sort of fat-shaming seems to be on a rinse, repeat cycle. Any number of female stars have dealt with being body-shamed – Raveena Tandon recently spoke to ANI about being called "thunder thighs" back in the 90s when she was a leading star. Several decades on, nothing has changed. Selena Gomez recently addressed hurtful comments on her appearance, revealing that the medication she takes for lupus affects her weight. Divyanka Tripathi and Amrita Arora called trolls who fat-shamed them last year. Vidya Balan, in an interview with Times Of India, said, "My weight issue had become a national issue. I have always been a fat girl; I wouldn't say that I am at a stage where my fluctuating weight doesn't bother me anymore at all. But I have come a long way."

Anushka Shetty, last seen in 2020 film Nishabdham, is currently working on a untitled project.
