The teaser for the upcoming mythological film Mahakali is now out. It introduces a story that examines the age-old conflict between Devas and Asuras from a different perspective. The film is the latest addition to the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU) after Hanu-Man.
At the heart of the teaser is a simple question: what if the side that is usually seen as evil has its own version of the story?
The teaser brings up the events of the Samudra Manthan and the fight over Amrit. Both the Devas and Asuras took part in the churning of the ocean. However, the nectar of immortality was given only to the Devas. The teaser also raises questions about why the Asuras were denied their claim to Indra's throne and later sent to the underworld.
These questions come through the character of Shukracharya, the Guru of the Asuras, played by Akshaye Khanna. Rather than simply presenting a battle between good and evil, the teaser gives the Asuras a reason to fight back.
Soon, the conflict moves beyond mythology. Shukracharya declares that the Asuras will soon be free from their oppression. The teaser then introduces Raktabeej and hints at a threat to humanity.
In one key moment, Shukracharya gives Raktabeej a direct order: “Raktabeej! Manav jaati ka sarvanaash kardo." This suggests that the film's conflict will involve more than just the Devas and Asuras.
There is also a mystery around a newborn baby. The teaser opens with the baby being placed inside a temple. The same child appears again towards the end, this time in the hands of Goddess Mahakali. The connection between the baby, Mahakali and the larger conflict is yet to be revealed.
The teaser ends with “The End Begins” before revealing the release date as January 8, 2027.
Along with Akshaye Khanna, Mahakali features Sriya Reddy, Bhoomi Shetty, Rohit Saraf, Rakesh Bedi, Samuthrakani, Rajat Kapoor, Murali Sharma, Nassar and Prudhviraj.
Prasanth Varma is the creator of the PVCU, while Puja Aparna Kolluru has directed Mahakali. The film is presented by RK Duggal and produced by Riwaz Ramesh Duggal under the banner of RKD Studios.
