About Coochbehar

Constituency number 1, Cooch Behar, will go to polls on April 11 in the first phase of 17th Lok Sabha election. The constituency comprises Mathabhanga, Coochbehar Uttar, Coochbehar Dakshin, Sitalkuchi, Sitai, Dinhata and Natabari segments. Renuka Sinha had won the seat in the 16th Lok Sabha election, held in 2014, being a Trinamool Congress candidate. After she passed away, 2 years into her term, Partha Pratim Roy was elected to the Lok Sabha from the constituency in a by-election.

In the 2016 by-election, TMC candidate Partha Pratim Roy won the seat by 4,13,241 votes. He had defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Hem Chandra Barman.

This time, Trinamool Congress has fielded Paresh Chandra Adhikari for the seat. BJP candidate Nisith Pramanik will contest the seat along with All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) party nominated candidate Gobinda Roy.

The Cooch Behar seat was the stronghold of the AIFB from 1962 to 2009, except in 1963 (by-election) when Congress had won the seat.

Amarendranath Roy Pradhan had represented the constituency in the Lok Sabha 8-times. Benoy Krishna Das Choudhury was elected from the seat twice, in two successive terms, with two different tickets-All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) and Indian National Congress.
