Asansol Lok Sabha constituency, one of the total 32 Lok Sabha segments in West Bengal state, goes to the polls in the fourth phase of general elections 2019 on April 29.

About Asansol

Asansol, the coal mining belt of the West Bengal, is 40th constituency in the State. In this constituency voting will be held on April 29 in the fourth phase of the general election. As per the last poll, the total electors in the constituency were close to 15 lakh. The constituency comprises-Pandaveswar, Raniganj, Asansol, Asansol Uttar, Kulti, Barabani, Asansol Dakshin and Jamuria.

This time, BJP candidate and the current parliamentarian Babul Supriyo will contest from Asansol. Trinamool Congress has fielded Bengali screen legend and the daughter of popular Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, Moon Moon Sen this time from Asansol seat. In 2014 general election Ms Sen had won the Bankura seat. She had defeated the nine time MP Basudeb Acharia. 

In the last Lok Sabha election, the singer-turned-MP, had won the seat by a margin of 70,435 seats. While Mr Supriyo had garnered 4,19,938 votes TMC's Dola Sen got 3,49,503 votes.

The Asansol constituency was formed in 1957 and Congress' Mano Mohan Das was the first MP. Again in 1962 Congress won the seat and Atulya Ghosh was the MP. 18 years later, 1980 and 1984 Congress' Ananda Gopal Mukhopadhyaya won the seat. While SSP won the seat in 1967, in 1971, 1977, 1998, 1999 and 2004 the constituency remained CPM dominated.
