IIT Bombay Convocation 2026: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay celebrated its 64th Convocation with the Departmental Degree Award Functions. The institute awarded a total of 3,763 degrees to 3,442 students. It includes a record 620 PhD degrees. The latest figures shows IIT Bombay's growing focus on advanced research and doctoral education. The institute's Autumn session also saw a large number of students receive their degrees as they prepared to begin new journeys in higher studies, research and professional careers.

According to the institute's data, the total degrees awarded included 1,713 undergraduate degrees, 1,430 postgraduate degrees and 620 doctoral degrees. Among the 3,442 graduating students, 791 were women and 2,651 were men.

During the two-day Autumn convocation and departmental degree award functions, 3,333 degrees were conferred on 3,042 graduating students. This group included 1,663 undergraduate graduates, 1,319 postgraduate graduates and 351 PhD graduates.

620 PhD degrees is the highest number of doctoral degrees awarded by any IIT in a single academic year. The number marks a significant increase in doctoral graduates compared with the previous five years, when the annual number had generally remained between around 300 and nearly 500.

The increase was also linked to a review of long-pending research work. Nearly 100 to 125 students whose research had remained incomplete for more than eight years were identified during this process.

Of the 351 PhD degrees awarded during the Autumn session, the Department of Chemistry recorded the highest number with 47 doctoral degrees. It was followed by Electrical Engineering with 30 PhD degrees and Mechanical Engineering with 27. Biosciences and Bioengineering awarded 24 doctoral degrees, while Humanities and Social Sciences and Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science awarded 23 PhD degrees each.
