Three Delhi Police personnel were injured after they were allegedly attacked with bricks and sticks, and chilli powder was thrown into their eyes by a group of people during a confrontation over the seizure of a motorcycle.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when police personnel were carrying out routine patrolling and checking in the Janta Vihar area of Mukundpur in Delhi's Bhalswa Dairy area.
During the checking, police seized a motorcycle that was allegedly being operated without valid documents and took it to the police station.
According to Delhi Police, at around 3:30 pm, the owner of the motorcycle and his family members confronted the police personnel over the seizure. The situation soon turned violent, with the group allegedly throwing chilli powder at the policemen and attacking them with bricks and sticks.
Two head constables, Dinesh and Rajesh, were initially attacked. Another police personnel, HC Tinu, who reached the spot to assist them, was also assaulted.
"Later, the motorcycle owner and some of his family members allegedly confronted the policemen and turned violent. The accused allegedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of the police personnel and attacked them with bricks and sticks. Head Constable Tinu, who reached the spot to assist his colleagues, was also attacked," a police officer said, news agency PTI reported.
All three policemen sustained injuries in the attack. HC Dinesh suffered a head injury. The injured personnel were provided medical treatment and are stated to be stable.
With the assistance of local residents, police apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile from the spot. The remaining accused managed to flee, and efforts are underway to trace them.
Delhi Police identified Sunil alias Pankaj as the main accused and alleged aggressor. Police said Pankaj is a bad character of the area and has five previous criminal involvements, including cases related to heinous offences and two cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act).
A case has been registered at Bhalswa Dairy Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Further investigation is underway, and efforts are being made to apprehend the remaining accused.
