Volkswagen Reboots Polo As An All-Electric Hatch- Launch Next Year

The Volkswagen ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI will be introduced in their production form in 2026.

Volkswagen is now using its iconic nameplates for its new era of electric cars. Changing their naming strategy, the brand has reverted to using its old nameplates with a new prefix, "ID". The result, names like ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI for upcoming electric cars, which is deeply rooted in the brand's history. Currently in a concept form, the vehicles will be introduced into their production form in 2026. Before that, the EVs of the brand will be showcased by the brand at the upcoming Munich Motor Show.

The Volkswagen ID.Polo is underpinned by the MEB platform and might get a 38 kWh battery pack, with the option of a 56 kWh unit. These are capable of pushing the range up to 450 km on a single charge. While the charging capabilities are expected to be up to 125 kW. Meanwhile, the all-electric hot hatch ID.Polo GTI might get a 226 hp electric motor. There will also be an ID.Polo GTI Clubsport variant with 286 hp and a 400 hp dual-motor version, AWD version sporting the 'R' badge.

The all-electric hatchbacks borrow many design elements from the concepts they are derived from. To begin with, it has slim headlights and taillights alongside a spacious glasshouse. Taking it to the next level, GTI brings more sporty design features, including slightly bulging wheel arches, a small front diffuser, split spoilers mounted on the boot, and dual cutouts in the rear bumper. Additionally, the ID Polo GTI comes equipped with larger alloy wheels with a unique design.

On the scale, the Volkswagen ID.Polo measures 4,053mm in length, 1,816mm in width, and 1,530mm in height, making it slightly larger than the international-specification internal combustion engine (ICE) Polo.

The interior of the ID.Polo is expected to have a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, along with a 10.9-inch digital instrument cluster. Furthermore, there will be physical buttons and switches for the audio and climate control systems. In accordance with VW's goal to enhance material quality while minimizing the environmental impact of its vehicles, the cabin of this electric hatchback will not incorporate glue or hard plastics.
