Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will switch to a monthly subscription model only after February 14, scrapping one-time purchase options. Currently, vehicle owners in the US can buy FSD (Supervised) with a one-time payment of 8,000 USD (around Rs 7.21 lakh) or subscribe at 99 USD (around Rs 8,927) per month.

FSD functions as an advanced driver assistance system, demanding constant driver attention and readiness to intervene. Tesla vehicles equipped with Autopilot handle acceleration, braking, and highway lane-keeping, while FSD adds city-street capabilities like lane changes and traffic signal recognition.

The shift comes amid regulatory scrutiny. Last year, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a probe into 2.88 million Tesla vehicles with FSD, triggered by over 50 traffic-safety violation reports and multiple crashes.

Tesla recently appended "Supervised" to its FSD branding for passenger cars, distinguishing it from an unsupervised variant used to shuttle new vehicles from factory assembly lines to delivery lots. Musk positions self-driving tech and robotics as Tesla's core growth engines, especially as the EV giant battles two straight years of declining car sales.

For Indian consumers, Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) package is currently available for purchase with the vehicle, but its advanced features are not yet accessible. While basic autopilot functions can be used, the full capabilities of FSD remain unavailable in India.

Presently, the brand only has the Tesla Model Y on sale in the country. The car comes at a starting price of Rs 59.89 lakh for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant and Rs 67.89 lakh for the Long Range RWD.
