Tata Motors has announced a new sales milestone for its micro SUV, the Punch. The model launched in the Indian market in October 2021 has crossed sales of 6 lakh units in India within four years of its launch. It is also one of the most affordable models in the brand's lineup, the micro SUV has been one of the star performers of the brand in terms of sales. Earlier, in the calendar year 2024, it also became the best-selling model in the country, taking the crown in Tata's name.
Tata Punch's prime rival in the category, the Hyundai Exter, was launched in the country in July 2023. Since then, the South Korean micro SUV has achieved cumulative sales of up to 1.54 lakh units till April 2025, i.e, in almost 2 years of launch in the country.

The vehicle is offered in petrol, CNG, and electric powertrain variants and has achieved 5-star safety ratings according to both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP standards. It represented 36 percent of Tata Motors' total passenger vehicle sales and captured a 38 percent market share in the sub-compact SUV segment in FY25.
Ownership statistics indicate that around 70 percent of ICE Punch owners are new buyers, while 25 percent of Punch.ev owners are women, as stated by the company. In terms of geography, the model enjoys a well-distributed demand, with 24 percent of customers from tier-1 cities, 42 percent from tier-2 cities, and 34 percent from tier-3 cities.
The Hyundai Exter is aimed at a younger, tech-oriented audience. It includes features such as a sunroof, advanced connected car technology, and India's first dual-cylinder CNG setup in its category. It has rapidly established itself as Hyundai's third-best-performing SUV, accounting for nearly 20 per cent of the total SUV sales in FY2025.
