Motorists who were stuck in the massive traffic jam on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway earlier this month will soon receive financial relief. On Sunday, February 22, 2026, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) confirmed that toll charges collected during the disruption will be refunded. The total amount, estimated at rs 5.16 crore, will be credited directly to the FASTag accounts of affected vehicle owners.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Jam: Incident

The disruption began on February 3, 2026, when a gas tanker overturned on the Khopoli stretch. Safety protocols were immediately activated, resulting in a complete halt of traffic. The standstill lasted for more than 33 hours, with queues stretching nearly 20 kilometres by the following evening. Commuters were left stranded, facing shortages of food, water, and other essentials during the prolonged gridlock.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Jam: Refund Coverage Across Highways

According to MSRDC officials, the refund will not be limited to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. It will also cover tolls collected on affected stretches of the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway during the same period. Toll operators have been instructed to provide detailed FASTag transaction records to identify eligible vehicles and ensure accurate refunds.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Jam: FASTag Credit Timeline

Although toll collection was ordered to be suspended immediately after the accident, deductions had already been made from several FASTag accounts. MSRDC has now decided to reverse those charges in full. The credited amount will reflect directly in motorists' FASTag wallets within the next few days, ensuring transparency and convenience.
