National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to introduce an advanced AI-powered dashcam monitoring system across nearly 40,000 km of national highways, marking a major step towards smarter road management. Announced as part of a technology-driven push, the initiative aims to improve maintenance efficiency, enhance safety standards, and enable real-time tracking of road conditions using data-backed insights and automated surveillance tools across India.
What Is NHAI's AI Dashcam Monitoring System?
The new system, known as Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS), leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to monitor and assess highway conditions. Under this initiative, high-resolution dashboard cameras will be installed on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs), which will carry out regular surveys across highway stretches.
These cameras will capture continuous video and image data, which will then be processed through AI-powered models. The system is designed to automatically identify more than 30 types of road defects and anomalies, significantly reducing the need for manual inspections and enabling faster issue detection.
NHAI's AI DAS: What Will It Monitor?
The AI-powered system will primarily focus on pavement conditions, including potholes, cracks, and surface wear. In addition, it will monitor road infrastructure such as lane markings, crash barriers, streetlights, and signage.

The scope also extends to identifying safety concerns and encroachments. This includes detecting illegal median openings, unauthorised hoardings, roadside obstructions, and improper parking. The system will further track issues like waterlogging, vegetation growth, blocked drainage, and the condition of bus bays.
To strengthen safety checks, NHAI will also conduct periodic night-time surveys. These inspections will evaluate the visibility and performance of road markings, reflectors, and highway lighting systems.

NHAI's AI Dashcam Monitoring System: How It Works?
The collected data will be fed into a centralised digital platform equipped with AI analytics and interactive dashboards. This system will allow officials to monitor highway conditions in real time, compare data over time, and track the progress of repair and maintenance work more efficiently.
To streamline operations, the highway network will be divided into five zones for better data management and oversight. The insights generated will also be integrated into NHAI's central data ecosystem, ensuring timely action on identified issues.
