However, it appears that Indian consumers' preferences have begun to change recently, as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, a sedan, emerged as the best-selling car in April 2026 and overall in the previous calendar year. It surpassed several other models and was subsequently followed by smaller SUVs.

India's passenger vehicle market began FY2027 on a strong note in April 2026, with retail sales touching a record high for the month. According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), carmakers retailed 4,07,335 units during the month, marking the highest-ever April sales and a 12.21 per cent year-on-year growth. The latest sales chart once again showed how Indian buyers continue to split their choices between sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, and MPVs.

Brand-Wise Model Distribution
Maruti Suzuki dominated the list with six models in the top 10, while Tata Motors secured two spots. Hyundai and Mahindra completed the remaining positions, underlining the broad spread of demand across segments. Interestingly, while SUVs continued to account for a large share of high-volume models, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire emerged as the best-selling passenger vehicle in the country for the month.

The Dzire led the chart with 23,580 units, registering a 38.74 per cent year-on-year increase. Tata Punch and Punch EV followed in second place with 19,107 units, while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga came third with 19,063 units. The Fronx, Wagon R, Baleno, Nexon, and Swift also posted healthy numbers, reflecting strong demand for practical and value-focused models.
Among the relatively bigger SUVs, the Hyundai Creta remained the best selling midsize SUV in April 2026, although sales dipped 10.14 per cent to 15,291 units. The Mahindra Scorpio nameplate, including the Classic and Scorpio N, closed the top 10 with 14,719 units.
The April 2026 sales performance shows that Indian car buyers are still gravitating toward models that offer efficiency, low running costs, and broad everyday usability. While SUVs remain popular, compact sedans and hatchbacks continue to hold their ground in a market that rewards practical packaging and strong value.
