Following its successful collaboration with SAIC's MG Motor, JSW Group is preparing to launch its own automotive brand under the JSW Motors name. The company has already confirmed plans for a plug-in hybrid SUV based on Chery's Jetour T2 and an electric SUV derived from the iCar V23. Now, a third product appears to be in the works, built on Chery's Jaecoo J5 platform. A heavily camouflaged prototype was recently spotted testing near Pune, signalling JSW's intent to broaden its lineup.
The Jaecoo J5 was first introduced in 2025 and is currently sold in markets such as China and Indonesia. Depending on the region, it is offered with petrol, hybrid, or fully electric powertrains. The test vehicle seen in India is believed to be the EV version, aligning with JSW's electrification roadmap. Internationally, the J5 features slim LED lighting signatures, aero-optimised 19-inch wheels, and a minimalist cabin dominated by a 14.8-inch vertical touchscreen. Premium trims add conveniences like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, a 540-degree camera system, six airbags, and Level 2 ADAS. For India, JSW branding will replace Jaecoo's original badging.

Globally, the J5 is available in both ICE and EV formats. The hybrid variant pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a small battery pack, producing a combined 221 bhp and 295 Nm of torque. It is front-wheel drive only, with claimed efficiency of 18.8 km/l. The electric version uses a 58.9 kWh battery, delivering a range of around 402 km. Its single front-mounted motor generates 211 PS and 288 Nm, offering competitive performance in the midsize SUV segment.

JSW Motors is establishing a new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, with assembly operations scheduled to begin in August 2026. The first product to roll out will be a plug-in hybrid SUV, followed by battery-electric models. The Jaecoo J5-based SUV is expected to join the lineup soon after, strengthening JSW's presence in both hybrid and EV categories.
