The Delhi Police has recently been conducting special campaigns to take strict action against wrong-side driving. To raise awareness about this issue, the police department has released a video on social media, informing the public about the serious consequences for those who violate this rule. According to the video, the police will file a First Information Report (FIR) against offenders.
Delhi Police's Action Against Wrong-Side Driving
The Delhi Traffic Police is intensifying its efforts to crack down on those who violate traffic regulations. In a recent operation, the police recorded 1,170 FIRs and seized 1,179 vehicles during a two-day city-wide initiative targeting wrong-side driving. These operations took place on May 22 and 23 on various highways, intersections, and accident-prone areas throughout the national capital.

During this recent initiative, the traffic police issued 12,568 challans to individuals who were driving on the wrong side of the road. Authorities also confirmed that strict legal measures have been enforced, including the filing of FIRs. Legal action will be initiated against those noted in FIRs, who will subsequently face prosecution. Previously, the police recorded 72 FIRs and issued 7,249 challans in just five days as part of an earlier operation against wrong-side drivers.

A First Information Report (FIR) shifts the case into the realm of criminal law and can be filed when a violation leads to an accident. An offender may be caught on video multiple times, or the enforcement officer may determine that the risk level is significant enough to escalate the situation.
Endangering Road Safety
Driving against traffic is one of the leading causes of fatal accidents. This practice often leads to head-on collisions, which have the highest rates of fatalities. The severity of these accidents is heightened by the combined speed at which the vehicles are approaching each other. For instance, if two vehicles are traveling toward each other at 50 kmph, the collision will result in an impact experienced at 100 kmph, considerably increasing the severity of the incident.
