India is pushing ahead with its ethanol-blending programme with notified standards for E22, E25, E27, and E20 fuels. This marks the next step in the transition from petrol, as policymakers broaden the regulatory framework for higher-ethanol fuels and flex-fuel vehicles. The timing of the development is important as it comes amid geopolitical tensions and a volatile global energy market. Considering the factors, it represents India's push to reduce dependence on crude oil.

Under a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) notification, the new standard took effect on May 15, 2026. Based on the new standard, "E22, E25, E27, and E30 Fuel, Admixture of Anhydrous Ethanol and Motor Gasoline for Usage in Positive Ignition Engine Powered Vehicles." In simple words, the notification creates a fuel-quality framework in preparation for the ecosystem for the next stage of ethanol adoption.

In addition to the E30 fuel norms, BIS has also introduced updated standards for Dimethyl Ether (DME) blended LPG, along with several other industrial specifications.

Distillers' Association Reaction

All India Distillers' Association welcomed the new notification claiming that it will "provide interim relief to the industry by helping absorb the current surplus sugar and ethanol production capacities."

Addressing the new update, Vijendra Singh, President, All India Distillers' Association, said, "While this is an important milestone, the long-term vision should now move decisively towards higher blends such as E85 and E100. Considering the new capacities being created across the sector, the future of India's ethanol programme will increasingly depend on the growth of flex-fuel mobility and a supportive ecosystem for higher ethanol usage."

"FFVs can play a transformational role in enabling higher ethanol consumption, strengthening energy security, reducing emissions, and creating a sustainable long-term market for domestic biofuels," he added.

AIDA also mentioned that India has already made significant strides under its Ethanol Blending Programme, and the rollout of E22 and E30 fuel specifications paves the way for the next phase of ethanol-driven mobility solutions.
