BYD Teaser

BYD has officially teased its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model for the Indian market. With this, they are signalling a notable expansion of their current all-electric portfolio in the country. The Chinese automaker, which has so far focused exclusively on electric vehicles (EVs) in India, appears ready to introduce hybrid technology that combines electric efficiency with the practicality of an internal combustion engine.

The teaser confirms that the upcoming model will feature BYD's 'DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid' powertrain. The DM-i system, short for 'Dual Mode - intelligent', integrates a petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver improved fuel efficiency and extended driving range. This setup is designed to offer the benefits of electric mobility while addressing concerns around charging infrastructure and range anxiety, which remain relevant in the Indian market.

While BYD has not disclosed the exact model set for launch, two strong contenders have emerged: the Atto 2 DM-i and the Sealion 6 PHEV. The Atto 2, which has been under consideration for India for some time, was previously spotted testing on Indian roads in August 2025. Internationally, it is offered with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with battery options of 7.8 kWh and 18 kWh. Depending on the configuration, the system produces up to 212 hp and offers a combined WLTP range of nearly 998 km.

The Sealion 6 is another likely candidate, especially given its presence at Auto Expo 2025 and recent testing sightings in India. Globally, the 1.5-litre NA PHEV configuration is exclusively FWD and produces a total of 218 hp, boasting an NEDC-certified electric range of as much as 140 km. In contrast, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol PHEV features AWD as standard and generates up to 344 hp, with a reported all-electric range of up to 128 km. The overall driving range for the Sealion 6 PHEV is estimated to be 1,092 km.
