BMW Motorrad has unveiled the new Superhooligan race, based on the R 1300 R, at the Dayton Bike Week. While the motorcycle carries the vibe of a machine created for the streets, it is actually a tribute. The motorcycle commemorates the 50th anniversary of Steve McLaughlin's win on the R 90 S at the first Superbike race at Daytona.

Paying its respects, the Superhooligan carries McLaughlin's #83 number along with an orange paint inspired by the R 90 S used on the race in 1976. The orange frame brings good contrast with the blue-coloured subframe and fork tubes. These match the brake callipers, which it borrows from the M 1000 RR. Enhancing its overall aesthetics is a carbon front wheel along with other carbon fibre components.

To get into the Superhooligan-worthy shape, the automaker has used fully adjustable hand levers, an Akrapovic titanium exhaust with carbon ends, milled footrests, Wilbers suspension and inverted fork tubes with extra 30 mm travel for better lean angle clearance. All of this is aimed at improving the handling of the motorcycle and delivering a "superbike-level riding experience." It is capable of reaching speeds of up to 275 kmph.

The BMW R 1300 R, which is used as a base, is powered by a 1300 cc air/liquid-cooled four-stroke flat twin engine. This unit belts out 145 hp of power at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm of peak torque at 6,500 rpm. It functions with a ride-by-wire throttle and comes paired with a six-speed gearbox.

The BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan will be displayed next to its historic predecessor, the BMW R 90 S from the Butler & Smith team, as well as the legendary figures from the 1976 racing season in Daytona. The celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic 200-mile race in Florida will take place in Daytona from March 5th to 7th, 2026.
